At the time using a modeled hybrid approach instead of a sampled approach was new, and the timing was right because storage space was still pretty expensive and available CPU was also an issue. I bought TruePianos about 10 years ago, I think not long after it was released. After all, how many people regularly play a perfectly tuned acoustic piano? The piano also 'has some miles on it', and is not perfect, with a few notes with slight unison detuning here and there, which I feel adds to the realism. Something about the clarity and realism of the hammer attacks, and the multiple velocity & time matched release samples that is just very real and satisfying to play and listen to for me.

I prefer this sampled Kawai EX Pro over all of them (maybe equal tie with the quite different TrueKeys Italian Fazioli Grand). It's the 2nd piano sampled and released by Lance Herring (the Academic Grand - which is a 1960's era New York Steinway D - was his first I believe) who went onto form VI Labs and their well known TrueKeys Pianos and Ravenscroft 275. Production Voices have some of their instruments on sale, for example the ones for the free Sforzando player, which is good for you, as you don't own Kontakt 5. They have some interesting products, among them a Yamaha C7, and a Kawai Grand. Not worth the trouble, as I have so many other piano VSTs.Īs for options right now, Acousticsamples have a Christmas sale, 30% off everything. My license for the VSTi likes to disappear from my computer. I have an annoying bug with AK Studio Grand. I don't use it now, but I liked playing with it in the beginning.
